We are thrilled to feature Sharon G. Flake’s The Life I’m In, sister novel (book 2 of 2) to Flake's award-winning debut novel, The Skin I’m In (book 1 of 2). In The Skin I'm In, we saw into the life of Maleeka Madison, a seventh grader who was ridiculed and teased by Char and others because of her dark skin colour. Many readers were left at the end of The Skin I’m In wondering what happened to Char. Anyone who has watched a friend, relative, or even acquaintance suffer through life circumstances which changed them leaving them broken and angry at the world, made us want better for Char and to wonder what her fate might be. This long-anticipated book follows Charlese Jones (Char) as she exposes readers to those life conditions which cause young people to act out and bully others. The book also exposes readers to the important topic of human trafficking, drawing young and adult readers alike to the need for more awareness around this devastating issue and ways we can open dialogues and advocate for an end to trafficking. Thank-you Sharon for this necessary addition to young readers literature!
